Luxury

Extended through May 1st The gallery is extending the Martin Parr Luxury show another week. If you haven’t seen it, please stop in.

Parr has compiled images from various locales throughout the world, from Paris to Moscow, from Durban to Dubai. Gatherings at horse races, art fairs (they're remarkably similar), concerts and ski slopes, provide Parr with an extraordinary wealth of observations.

Is luxury money, is it excess, is it the enjoyment of arcane pleasures? A cacophony of colors and Parr’s signature love of absurdity, are on view in these charming yet disturbing photographs. The flash, the dressing up and partying, the seemingly coincidental matching of patterns and colors in unlikely places, all commingle in this body of colorful and witty work. In a world seemingly in economic decline, these photographs are all the more revealing and poignant.

An accompanying book is available through the gallery.

Janet Borden, Inc. is pleased to announce a new exhibition by Hanno Otten. Otten’s new work continues to explore the abstract, with new approaches and refinements to the concept. These photographs embrace a more organic and personal approach to photography than in his previous studies.

Im Parc, a series of green and yellow abstractions, invokes a sense of landscape rather than a literal one. In another series, Battle Paintings, drips and swirls insistently reveal their sources as paintings, without giving up a hint of content. Lush bands of bright color comprise a third group.

In this show, Otten has created a portmanteau art, by photographing painted abstracts of fluid color creating a more exciting surface image than in the earlier pure light work. He once again manipulates color and light to create a modern palette of vivid hues. As in his earlier work, Otten insists on the primacy of color, forgoing any literal or narrative imagery.
